Redstone is a vanilla Minecraft item harvested directly from Redstone Ore. It is the base of all redstone items, including the items that are added from mods such as RedPower 2 or Project Red. Redstone Ore can be found at the bottom 16 layers of the world, appearing in about 1% of Stone below layer 14. The Redstone Ore itself can be obtained with an Iron Pickaxe (or equivalent) or higher that has the Silk Touch enchantment (or similar), or by using a Rock Cutter. The ore can then be processed in a Macerator to receive 10 Redstone dust instead of the normal 4-6, yielding approximately twice the normal amount of Redstone gained by mining it manually.
Redstone has many uses in Feed the Beast. Notable uses include, RE-Battery from IndustrialCraft2, the Red-Doped Wafer and Red Alloy Ingot (each used in many wiring block and machine recipes) from RedPower 2, the Electron Tubes from Forestry, the Laser and Assembly Table from BuildCraft, and other Vanilla items such as Redstone Torches, Redstone Repeaters, which are useful in the automation of machines and Redstone circuitry. You can also put redstone dust in an MFE (possibly other EU power storage blocks too), and it will generate roughly 1024 EU for each item processed. The dust will dissappear after it has been used.
