The Item Mortar is a device from Professor Flaxbeard's Wondrous Steam Power Mod. It is used to shoot items over long distances.
In order for Item Mortar to work, Steam has to be delivered to it using Pipes. There should be no blocks above the Mortar. Items/blocks that need to be launched can be inserted into Item Mortar using Hoppers or by any other means, but a player cannot insert items manually as Item Mortar has no inventory/GUI.
To mark the area where items should be delivered, a player has to use an Astrolabe. Pressing shift and right-clicking a location on the ground will save the location, which will be displayed below the item name on the Astrolabe's tooltip. Right-clicking an Item Mortar with a targeted Astrolabe will aim it towards the set location. The Item Mortar has infinite range.
The Item Mortar will start shooting when it has steam and an inserted item. It isn't a precise device, so the shells will drop in the 5 block diameter around the marked location. The Mortar will consume 200 Steam Units to launch an item.
Esteemed Innovation Entry[edit]
I've found an ingenious way to transport items - a pressurized steam cannon!
This mortar will launch items skyward, at a high trajectory, to land at a targeted location.
Simply insert items via a hopper, set a target, and watch items fly.
An astrolabe is my device of choice for aiming the mortar. First, I have to shift-right click on the targeted location with an astrolabe, and then right click on the mortar to calibrate it.
