In Ars Magica 2, a Nexus can only transmit its essence up to ten (10) blocks away. The Essence Conduit is used as a middle-man repeater when a player needs to transfer essence further than ten blocks, either to another Essence Conduit or Crafting Altar. The range of an Essence Conduit is the same as a Nexus: ten blocks. They can, however, be daisy-chained every ten blocks to create longer-distance essence transfers.
Conduits cannot be used without some Deficit accrual, though it can be mitigated. Deficit will build at a rate dependent on how much essence is traveling through the conduit per tick. WARNING: At 1000 Deficit, the conduit will explode! The Essence Conduit will "cool down" or shed Deficit at a rate of 0.5 Deficit per tick, or 10 Deficit per second, until it reaches zero. Crystal Pillars placed one block away from the Essence Conduit will reduce Deficit buildup by 400 per second, in addition to helping prevent explosions. Deficit can be gauged using a Sense Energy Spell.
To link a Nexus to an Essence Conduit, right-click the Nexus with a Crystal Wrench. A pillar of light will appear over the rune inscription in the center of the nexus. Right-click an Essence Conduit that is in range and the pillar will move to the Essence Conduit. It is possible to daisy-chain Essence Conduits in this way until you are within range of a Crafting Altar. Right-click the actual Crafting Altar block in the center of the top of that structure, and the Nexus will now be linked to the altar and can provide essence for spell creation through the Essence Conduits!
