The Breadth-First Search Upgrade is an upgrade item added by the Extra Utilities mod. It changes the behavior of the Transfer Node to allow for more methodical transfer of items through a network of Transfer Pipe with many inventories. Normally a transfer node searching through a network will pick at random the path it will attempt to drop items into. With a Breadth-First Search Upgrade, when the node reaches a junction it will search one meter down a random path from that junction, then search one meter down the next valid path from the junction etc., thus searching all paths simultaneously. This method will ensure that items are always placed in the closest valid inventory to the node. When there is more than one valid inventory equidistant to the node (and closer than any other inventory) one of the two will receive the contents of the buffer at random, much the same as they would with the default operation of the node.
Because of the way that the Breadth-First Search Upgrade causes a transfer node to search down branching paths the node will transfer more slowly down multiple paths, and could slow a crawl in a network with branches and sub-branches. Because of this, and because the node will not search a branch again until its buffer is emptied (resetting the search), this upgrade is best suited to a network of numerous short branches off a main path, such as a single line of transfer pipe adjacent to a line of chests.
This is the default search behavior of the Transfer Node (Energy).
