Basalt is a stone that forms Volcanoes. Currently the only use for Basalt is blast resistance and decoration. When mined with a pickaxe, it drops a block of Basalt Cobblestone, which can be used to craft a Basalt Paver from a single piece. You can get Basalt by smelting the Basalt Cobble or you can obtain Basalt by using a pickaxe with the silk touch enchantment. This pure Basalt can be crafted into Basalt Bricks.
With GregTech installed you can grind basalt in a Macerator to get Basalt Dust.
Basalt can also be generated from flowing Lava blocks adjacent to a Thermopile with at least 200 cold, although it can take several minutes.

Farming[edit]
It is possible to make an automated basalt farm using Thermopiles, Block Breakers, Pneumatic Tubes and a Light Sensor.
Arrange the Thermopiles in a column, then place a Block Breaker for each Thermopile facing the same block the Thermopile is and Lava in front of the top-most Thermopile (so every Thermopile and Block Breaker is facing flowing lava); In at least 2 of the 3 restant blocks adyacent to the Thermopiles there needs to be either Ice or Snow (so there's 100 more "cold" than "heat" powering the Thermopile), if you have XyCraft mod you can use Xychorium Ice to prevent the Snow or Ice to be reverted to Water, otherwise you will need a snow blocks farm to replace the blocks that melts (one can use Deployers for this task).
At the bottom of the column place the Light Sensor, this will continuously send a redstone signal, when basalt is created, lava will stop flowing, making the light be low enough for the Sensor to stop sending the signal (Make sure the "column" where lava flows and the sensor are insolated from the daylight, otherwise the sensor can stay in "on" even if there's no lava flowing), use this pattern to activate the Block Breakers; Is it recommended to use a Timer set to 2 seconds per column Height for triggering the Breakers, since the sensor can be "caught" in an off state when lava flowing down back to the sensor instantly makes basalt, not reseting the sensor state (this is a very low chance of happening, but once one constructs the farm one can forget about it, so it's better to prevent). Using Red Alloy Wire, redstone wiring can be much more compact. Last, connect all the Block Breakers to Pneumatic Tubes leading to a recollection chest.
Have in count that basalt is generated fairly slowly (1/300 chance of happening per Thermopile per second) and it won't be generated if the energy the Thermopiles are generating is not being delivered to a machine/Battery Box (RedPower 2), so one must either use the energy that's beign generated or store it (a Magma Crucible connected to a tank is an optimal and compact way of using/storing the energy generated, in form of lava); Also Block Breakers won't mine the block in front of them if the item they previously mined wasn't ejected, stoping the system.

Usage[edit]
Basalt (RedPower 2) can be used to create the following items:See also[edit]
