Stable Ages

An example of a mystcraft age, using ExtraBiomesXL biomes.

If you are running Mystcraft Version 10 (FTB Unleashed, for example) see below for the changes in MystCraft book writing mechanics.

Randomly generated Mystcraft Ages almost always have instability. This exhibits itself in either world effects like meteors and decay, character debuffs such as blindness and nausea, and debuffs from sky exposure such as slowness and poison.

Instability that causes potion effects such as poison or slowness are caused by exposure to the sun/sky, and as such can be negated if you have a block over your head or wearing a Quantum Helmet, although nausea and blindness will affect you even if you are wearing a quantum helmet or not exposed to the sun/sky. The spontaneous explosions can be turned off by playing on Peaceful mode.

Most instability is caused by conflicting symbols. A prominent example of this is selecting the Single Biome symbol and adding multiple biomes. Remember, there is no erase function, so once a symbol is written into the descriptive book it is there forever.

A dense ore world will always be unstable. This can be partially counteracted by adding symbols like ChargedMeteors, and Spontaneous Explosions.

Instability Types[edit]

  • Decay (Black, White, Colored)
  • Meteors
  • Lightning
  • Spontaneous Explosions

Sun Exposure Only:

  • Blindness
  • Nausea
  • Slowness
  • Poison
  • Mining Fatigue
  • Hunger

Stability in Mystcraft 0.10.{0,1}[edit]

A minimalist stable age in 0.10.{0,1} must include the following symbol types:

  • 1 Biome Controller (no mods)
  • n>0 Biomes (no mods)
  • n>0 Sun
  • n>0 Moon
  • n>0 Star
  • 1 Lighting (no mods)
  • 1 Terrain
  • 1 Weather
  • 1 Clear Modifiers (because of a bug in 0.10.0)

There are a very few symbols that break these rules explained below.

Symbols needed to make a stable world:

  1. If you select the Single Biome symbol, adding more than one biome symbol will cause instability.
  2. For the Tiny, Medium and Large Biome symbols, choose up to three biome symbols. If you select fewer than three, the remaining symbols will be randomly generated, which will not cause instability. Adding more than three biome symbols will cause instability.
  3. With the Checkered Biome symbol, choose up to two biome symbols. If you select fewer than two, the remaining symbols will be randomly generated, which will not cause instability. Adding more than two biome symbols will cause instability.
  4. Selecting more than one of either the Time or Weather symbols will cause instability.
  5. Select only one Void, Flat or Standard World Generation symbol. Selecting more will cause instability.
  6. The Dense Ore symbol will always cause instability.

Putting in a large number of Biomes seems to cause instability as well. This can be compensated for by putting in multiple Biome modifier pages such as Huge Biomes.

For example, lets say you have 9 favorite biomes that you would like to put in an Age in an attempt to make something similar to Overworld. If you just throw all 9 biome pages in, the Age seems to be unstable. However, adding in 3 Huge Biomes pages seems to compensate for that and return stability. Pages entered into the book as follows: Huge Biomes, Biome A, Biome B, Biome C, Huge Biomes, Biome D, Biome E, Biome F, Huge Biomes, Biome G, Biome H, Biome I.

    • Note** This may require more testing.

Stability changes from Mystcraft 0.9 to 0.10.x[edit]

Mystcraft version 0.10.x is a major change from 0.9 and earlier, but the stable age writing mechanic is still pretty much the same. The only difference is that there is now an order as in modifier and noun for some parts, and time is now changed to modifying Sun and Moon.

Here are a few things that are necessary for a stable age: (please fix if not needed or wrong)

  •  ??? Biome before a Biomes controller symbol
  • time in Sun and Moon, not sure if stars are needed
  • terrain generation in one of Flat or Standard Terrain
  • lighting from one of Bright or Standard Lighting
  • weather from one of No Weather or some other weather pages

That is mostly it, but you can add other stuff as long as they don't conflict each other. Here is an example of a stable age:

"Plains Biome" "Single Biome" "Bright" "Flat" "No Weather" "Noon (Zenith)" "Zero Length" "Normal Sun" "Dark Moon" "Dark Stars" "Villages" "Caves" "Dungeons" "Strongholds" "Clear Modifiers"

That will give a single biome of plains, with bright lighting everywhere, flat, no weather, always noon, no moon or stars, and some features.
