Server (OpenComputers)

This article is about the OpenComputers Server. You may be looking for another kind of Server.

A Server is a type of computer from OpenComputers. In general they function similarly to Computer Cases, however they are items, up to four of which can be placed into a single Server Rack to run. They can handle more components than a regular Computer Case and are thus able to manage more complex component networks.

Servers connect to external blocks based on the side configuration in the server rack - for example, to access Floppy Disks in a Disk Drive that is placed on top of the server rack, the server must be in the server rack slot that is configured to connect upwards. Therefore, servers can be set up in a similar fashion to a regular Computer Case.

If you do not wish to connect a disk drive to each server, you can use another computer to write an operating system or init.lua file onto the server's Hard Disk Drive, or install a custom EEPROM to boot the server in some other way, for example via network.

Control[edit]

In order to control the server, a Remote Terminal may be used instead of a Screen and Keyboard. Sneak-right-clicking the terminal onto a server in a rack will link the terminal to that server, and right-clicking it anywhere else will show the connected server's screen, provided it is in wireless range. Binding a remote terminal to a server will enable a "virtual" screen and keyboard component in the server, that will remain present even if the remote terminal is bound to another server, which can lead to screens and keyboards connected directly to the server to "not work" (because they are not selected as the primary components - which can be avoided with an appropriate autorun script). To "remove" these virtual components, remove the server from its rack and place it back in.

It is possible to connect multiple remote terminals to a server, however all terminals will show the same content (because there is only one virtual screen). The number of terminals that can be bound to a server at the same time depends on the server's tier. If more than the supported number of terminals are bound to a server, the oldest links will be disabled.

Tiers[edit]

Currently there are four server tiers available. Each tier provides more and more advanced component slots, allowing for construction of more advanced and complex computers. The last tier of server cannot be crafted and is only obtainable in Creative Mode or using cheats.

Note that in earlier versions of OpenComputers Component Busses did not yet exist. In these versions all slots that can now hold a Component Bus would accept a Central Processing Unit (CPU) of the same tier.
